Where to Stay

Location Info
Something you need to know before you come to Venice:

-
The island of Venice (what you imagine when you picture Venice) is called Venice San Lucia.
-
The Mainland is called Venice Mestre. This is where most of the locals live. See below: blue arrow points to Mestre, pink points to San Lucia.
Staying in
Venice Mestre
-
Mestre is a very quick train or bus ride away from San Lucia (shouldn't cost more than around 2 Euros)
-
Mestre is dangerous at night. Do not leave your residence at night if you stay here. I had quite the terrifying experience as I waited at the train station at night when I arrived after a trip to Croatia.

Staying in
Venice San Lucia
If you can swing it, I would recommend staying on the island of San Lucia.
-
It's beautiful, as safe as it gets, and you have the huge benefit of beating the crowds in the morning and night hours when it clears out.
-
The San Marcos area is where I'd recommend staying. It's stunning, very central, and puts you close to the Rialto bridge.

Hotels & Hostels
Hotels:

Luxury Hotels

The Griti Palace
-
Hotel Danieli
-
Hostels:
-
Wombat's City Hostel Mestre
-
The Generator San Lucia
Wombat's is in Mestre, but has a whopping 9.5 rating on hostel world which is hard to find! The Generator is just off of the main island and you will have to take a waterbus there for $7 a trip. However, the island which the hostel is located on (La Giudecca) is beautiful and quiet. It's a nice change in pace from a crowded San Lucia and will allow you to meet locals in the downstairs bar!

Best time to see Venice:
-
December (good all month)
Other quiet(ish) times:
-
Mondays-Wednesdays in October-November
I adore Venice. However, during the summer it is more difficult to enjoy due to the massive influx of tourists. A walk that is normally 10 minutes could take 30 due to all of the people filling the streets. Even the weekends can get this way up until December. The perfect time to go to Venice is around the first week of December when the stunning Christmas lights have been strung up all over the city and the tourists have almost vanished.
Ways to get around:
-
Walking
-
Waterbus
-
Private boat taxi
I recommend walking above anything. The waterbus takes just as long to get somewhere as walking does.
Note:
-
Gondolas are only used for short rides for tourists to get pictures and no one actually uses them for a practical purpose. Also know that the price for gondola rides are always negotiable.

The best way to get around Venice hands down is to turn off your GPS and get lost in the beautiful winding pathways!
I would recommend staying for around 3 days to get the full "Venezia" experience. You will likely want to check out the beaches of the nearby island called Lido.
